September 27 – Memorial Day
HERITAGE & HISTORYMEMORIAL DAYSAZERBAIJAN

The military operations that lasted from September 27 to November 10, 2020, entered Azerbaijan’s history as the Patriotic War. In this just struggle for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, our soldiers and officers demonstrated true heroism, while citizens working on the home front and the Azerbaijani people as a whole showed determination, resilience, and unity, delivering a crushing blow to the enemy.
Unable to withstand the victorious march of the Azerbaijani Army, the enemy targeted innocent civilians in an attempt to create fear and break the will of our people, committing war crimes in the process. As a result of Armenia’s shelling of residential areas with heavy artillery and missiles, nearly 100 civilians were killed and more than 400 were injured during the war. Many of our servicemen were martyred, went missing, or were wounded and lost their health.
Our lands were liberated from occupation at the cost of the blood and lives of our heroic martyrs. The glorious history written by the victorious Azerbaijani Army laid a strong foundation for a stronger Azerbaijan. It also became a decisive factor in ensuring sustainable peace, stability, and security in the region.
The people and state of Azerbaijan always honor the courage of their heroic sons and daughters, showing deep respect to the memory of the martyrs and keeping their legacy alive. In recognition of the soldiers and officers who fought heroically in the Patriotic War, raised the Azerbaijani flag over liberated lands, and sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of the country, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on December 2, 2020, declaring September 27 as Memorial Day in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Every year, September 27 – Memorial Day is observed with deep respect and reverence by the Azerbaijani community in Spain.
