On May 28, 1918, the Azerbaijani people witnessed a day written in golden letters in their history — the proclamation of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. It became the first democratic, parliamentary republic in the East and the Islamic world, founded by the Azerbaijani nation.

Although the Republic existed for only 23 months, it made significant progress in state-building. A parliament was formed based on universal suffrage, and national symbols — the tricolor flag, the emblem, and the anthem — were adopted. Important reforms were implemented in education, the military, and diplomacy.

The legacy of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic remains a source of pride for our people. The traditions it established form the foundation of today’s modern, independent Republic of Azerbaijan.
